Understand people and experience

Psychological knowledge.
Counselling perspectives.

Study the foundations of psychology alongside counselling theory and skills. Explore social, cognitive, biological and developmental psychology, develop your research methods, and consider how person-centred approaches help people examine their experiences.

Specialist study includes approaches to counselling psychology, core counselling skills, wellbeing, psychological assessment and the therapeutic process. Your final-level research project provides an opportunity to investigate a focused counselling-related topic.

Develop communication, critical evaluation, scientific reasoning and sensitivity to interpersonal factors. Consider different cultural perspectives as you connect theoretical understanding with research and reflective learning.

Confirm professional recognition before you apply

BPS accreditation and eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) must be checked for the exact provider, delivery mode and intake. This undergraduate degree alone does not qualify you to practise as a counselling psychologist. That profession requires further approved training and HCPC registration.

  • TOEFL iBT 80, subject to confirmation of the accepted test version and component requirements.
  • Evidence of previous study in English or an internal English assessment may be considered. Confirm accepted evidence and any exemption with admissions.

Connect theory and reflection

Teaching & assessment

Online learning brings together subject study, research and opportunities to reflect on your developing understanding. Ask about individual lecturer and academic-skills support, personal tutor sessions, peer activities and guest-speaker events available for your intake.

How you’ll learn

  • Use online learning materials and digital library resources.
  • Develop research, academic writing and statistical skills.
  • Explore counselling approaches through reflection and supervised learning activities.
  • Practise communication through role-play where included in the programme.
  • Use feedback from lecturers and peers to evaluate your learning.

Educational role-play is supervised skills practice and does not confer a professional practice qualification.

How you’ll be assessed

  • Individual reports and case-study analyses.
  • Role-plays and group presentations.
  • Reflective assignments agreed with your module leader.
  • A final-level Counselling Research Project.
  • A research-methods examination, subject to confirmation of the current assessment plan.

Assessment is mainly coursework-based. Confirm the examination requirements and any attendance or technology arrangements for your intake.

Plan your next step

Explore your future direction.

Develop transferable skills in communication, research, evaluation, problem-solving and responding to feedback. These can be relevant to people-focused roles and further study, depending on the experience and qualifications each opportunity requires.

  • Support and community-facing roles
  • Further counselling and wellbeing training
  • Human resources and people development
  • Careers and information services
  • Research and further psychology study
  • Communication, marketing and public-service pathways

Becoming a counselling psychologist

Progression into professional counselling psychology is a separate training route. Check GBC eligibility and the admission requirements of any postgraduate programme you intend to pursue. Approved professional training and HCPC registration are required to use the protected title of counselling psychologist; admission and registration are not automatic outcomes of this degree.

Other regulated professions, such as nursing and social work, have their own qualifying education and registration requirements. Confirm the route for the role and country where you intend to work.

A little more clarity

Your course questions.

Does this course include a Foundation Year?

The programme described here starts at Level 4 and continues through Levels 5 and 6. It is separate from the Psychology with Counselling with Foundation Year option in the application picker.

How long will the degree take?

The stated completion window is 3–9 years, allowing up to three years at each level. Many learners aim for 3–6 years. Agree your study pace and progression plan with the provider.

Is the course exam-free?

Assessment is mainly coursework-based, but the course information includes a research-methods examination. Confirm the current assessment plan before enrolling.

Will I be a qualified counselling psychologist after graduating?

No. The degree alone does not confer that professional qualification. Confirm accreditation and GBC eligibility, then check the further approved training and registration requirements for your intended career.

Which computer can I use?

Check current device, operating-system and statistics-software requirements with the provider. A device’s age alone does not establish compatibility with every required application.
