A foundation for your ambitions

Understand finance.
Think beyond the numbers.

Develop a foundation in accounting and finance principles and explore how organisations plan, report and manage their financial performance. This programme combines technical knowledge with an understanding of finance in business, commerce and management.

Study financial reporting, taxation and auditing alongside business planning, strategy and performance. Learn the technical language of finance while considering the social, political, ethical, technological and environmental questions that influence business decisions.

Build communication, data analysis, time management, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Academic study and practical scenarios help develop your analytical thinking, commercial awareness and confidence in approaching business challenges.

The Integrated Foundation Year supports research, communication and other transferable skills before degree-level study. The programme can suit school leavers and mature students returning to education. A direct degree route is also listed for applicants who meet its entry requirements.

In your final year, the Undergraduate Major Project offers an opportunity to investigate an area of professional interest, apply academic research and demonstrate your understanding of finance and accounting.

Connect theory with practice

Learn, analyse and apply.

A range of approaches supports different learning needs. Taught sessions, practical business scenarios and guided independent study help connect accounting concepts with their application.

How you’ll study

  • Lectures introduce key accounting, finance and business concepts.
  • Seminars explore topics through discussion and analysis.
  • Tutorials offer opportunities for questions and individual support.
  • Case studies and practical scenarios connect theory with business practice.
  • Independent study includes research, reading and assignment preparation.

Online learning, guest lectures and industry presentations may be used where suitable. Confirm the teaching arrangements for your intake; this is not a promise of a fully online route.

How you’ll be assessed

  • Time-constrained examinations and in-class tests.
  • Essays, reports and coursework assignments.
  • Presentations and portfolios.
  • A final-year Undergraduate Major Project.
  • Developmental activities and feedback to support your learning.

Formal assessments contribute to module marks. Developmental assessments provide feedback without contributing to the final mark. Each module confirms its assessment methods and weighting.

Looking beyond graduation

Find your financial direction.

Develop numerical, analytical and commercial skills relevant to public, private and voluntary organisations. Possible starting points include trainee accounting, audit or tax roles, with opportunities to explore banking, investment, insurance, retail, government and graduate schemes.

  • Chartered accountancy pathways
  • Stockbroking
  • Actuarial pathways
  • Economics
  • Tax advice
  • Forensic accounting
  • Accounting technician roles
  • Company secretarial work
  • Finance officer roles

These are potential directions to investigate. Specialist and professional careers can require further qualifications, examinations, experience or authorisation. The degree alone does not confer chartered status or guarantee employment.

Professional accounting and further study

You may consider professional accountancy study with a body such as ACCA, or postgraduate study in finance, accounting, business management or data analysis.

Check professional recognition

The course outline describes content relevant to professional accounting. ACCA accreditation and examination exemptions have not been confirmed for this exact course. Check the awarding institution, qualification, graduation year and modules using ACCA’s official guidance before relying on any exemptions.
